Rafael Nadal’s stroke that defeated Roger Federer but fell short against Novak Djokovic is examined by Martina Navratilova.

Rafael Nadal has officially retired after an extraordinary two-decade career, with his final match taking place last month during the Davis Cup. The 22-time Grand Slam champion will forever be remembered as one of the “GOATs” of tennis, alongside Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, collectively known as the “Big 3.” His epic rivalries with Federer and Djokovic captivated fans due to their unmatched intensity and skill level. However, former WTA legend Martina Navratilova recently suggested that Novak Djokovic posed a greater challenge to Nadal than Federer did.

In an episode of the Tennis Channel Live Podcast (December 3), former ATP player Paul Annacone asked Navratilova to compare Federer and Djokovic as Nadal’s rivals. Navratilova noted that Nadal found Federer easier to handle because of the Spaniard’s ability to exploit Federer’s one-handed backhand. She explained:

“Finding that backhand was a little easier for Rafael, using his cross-court forehand or running around to go down the line. He could open the court and still dominate with his forehand. Roger’s sliced backhand often left the court exposed.”

In contrast, Djokovic’s two-handed backhand made him a tougher opponent for Nadal. “Novak could take the ball early and defend more effectively, which made it harder to attack. This forced Rafael to target Novak’s forehand, altering the geometry of the point,” Navratilova added.

Djokovic’s Tribute to Nadal

Despite their intense rivalry, Djokovic has always shown respect for Nadal. After Nadal announced his retirement in October, Djokovic posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, thanking Nadal for pushing him to his limits and inspiring millions around the world. He wrote:

“Rafa, one post is not enough to express the respect I have for you. Thank you for pushing me to the very limit in our rivalry. Your legacy and fighting spirit will inspire future generations.”

Nadal’s Legacy

Nadal’s influence extends far beyond the tennis court. His determination, sportsmanship, and incredible achievements will serve as an inspiration for aspiring players for years to come. While Nadal may no longer compete, his legacy as the “King of Clay” and a tennis icon will endure.
