Hernández’s Familiar Fit with the Blue Jays
Teoscar Hernández, who played for the Jays before being traded to the Seattle Mariners in 2022, has continued to showcase his offensive firepower. Last season, Hernández signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, delivering a career-high performance with 33 home runs and 99 RBIs, helping the Dodgers secure a world title. Now a free agent, Hernández is predicted to command a lucrative deal, possibly over $60 million for three years.
MLB insider Ken Rosenthal believes the Dodgers are the favorites to retain Hernández, but he sees Toronto as a strong contender if the Dodgers don’t seal the deal. “If Hernández somehow does not land back with the Dodgers, the Blue Jays might be his most logical destination,” Rosenthal stated.
The Case for a Hernández Return
Hernández thrived during his initial tenure with the Blue Jays, earning two Silver Slugger awards and an All-Star nod. Over five seasons in Toronto, he maintained an impressive .283 batting average and .819 OPS. Bringing him back may not match the flashiness of a Soto acquisition, but it’s a pragmatic decision that addresses the team’s lineup needs.
Financial and Strategic Implications
While Juan Soto would be a blockbuster signing, it could force the Blue Jays to part with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the long term due to financial constraints. Rosenthal noted that adding Soto would “almost certainly” mean Guerrero’s departure, given the size of his looming contract extension.
In contrast, re-signing Hernández would allow the Blue Jays to retain Guerrero while fortifying their lineup. Hernández’s strong rapport with Guerrero could also bolster team chemistry, making his return a win-win situation. Pairing Hernández with Guerrero, Bo Bichette, and George Springer could provide a balanced and financially sustainable core for the Jays.
