Max Wöber’s potential departure from Leeds United in January is drawing strong reactions, with former Whites midfielder David Norris labeling it a “catastrophe” despite Wöber not being a first-choice center-back. The Austrian international, who recently returned from a knee injury that sidelined him for months, remains behind Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk in the defensive hierarchy.
Wöber, 26, has been linked with moves away in the past but remains under contract at Leeds until 2027. While his game time has been limited, Norris emphasized the importance of retaining him as defensive cover, especially in the event of injuries. “They’ve got to keep him. There’s not enough cover – an injury or two, and it’s a catastrophe at the back,” Norris told MOT Leeds News.
Although Leeds might be tempted to offload Wöber to raise funds, the club’s defensive depth could make such a decision risky. His role as part of a small group of returning loanees who have stayed with the squad further highlights his value, even if not as a starter.
For now, Wöber is expected to remain at Elland Road, with Daniel Farke unlikely to sanction a move unless the club secures defensive reinforcements in January.
