Leeds United star Ao Tanaka did something on Sunday that no-other Elland Road player has managed to do all season

Leeds United midfielder Ao Tanaka has had an outstanding month, earning both the club’s October Player of the Month award and the Player of the Match accolade in Sunday’s dramatic victory over Swansea City. His performance in that game was so impressive that teammate Wilfried Gnonto labeled him the “best player in the world.” Tanaka’s exceptional contributions on the pitch highlight the value Leeds gained by signing him for just £3.4 million.

Tanaka’s abilities have quickly endeared him to the Leeds fanbase. His precise passing, physical resilience, tactical intelligence, and relentless energy have become crucial for the team. Moreover, his combative style in midfield has drawn comparisons to and overshadowed the performances of players like Glen Kamara, whom he effectively replaced.

Statistically, Tanaka has been one of the best midfielders in England during October, excelling in regaining possession. He has recovered the ball 31 times this month, showcasing his ability to disrupt opposition attacks effectively.

On Sunday, Tanaka delivered a particularly impressive display in front of the defense, consistently breaking down Swansea’s offensive efforts. He was involved in 19 duels during the match and emerged victorious in 14 of them—a record no other Leeds player has matched this season. His tally surpassed notable performances such as Junior Firpo’s 12 duels won against Sheffield Wednesday and Georginio Rutter’s 11 against Portsmouth earlier in the season.

The remarkable consistency Tanaka has shown explains why manager Daniel Farke was so eager to bring him to Leeds from Fortuna Düsseldorf a year ago. His efforts have made him a fan favorite and an indispensable member of the squad.

Tanaka’s dominance in midfield raises questions about Leeds’ selection when Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev return to full fitness. While Ampadu, the club captain, remains an automatic starter, there is little doubt that Tanaka will join him in the central midfield due to his form and influence.
