Gabriel Medina’s Unparalleled Dominance at Teahupo’o
Gabriel Medina has established himself as the most dominant surfer in the history of Teahupo’o. Since his first Championship Tour victory at the iconic Tahitian break in 2014, where he conquered waves measuring 8 to 10 feet, Medina has consistently delivered exceptional performances. Over the past decade, his worst result at this location is a third-place finish. His accolades include another win in 2018 and four additional finals appearances, making him the most consistent surfer at Teahupo’o during this period. Adding to his achievements, Medina secured a bronze medal at this year’s Olympics, punctuated by a memorable and now-iconic kickout.
Although surfers like Kelly Slater, John John Florence, and Jack Robinson possess immense talent, none of them can match Medina’s exceptional track record at Teahupo’o. Since 2014, Slater and Robinson have each managed only one victory, while Florence, surprisingly, has yet to claim a win in Tahiti.
A recently released WSL highlight reel captures seven minutes of Medina’s Teahupo’o career, starting with his dramatic 2014 win over Kelly Slater. The compilation showcases all five of Medina’s perfect 10-point rides and several other near-perfect scores, reflecting his remarkable progression over the years. One standout moment occurs at 6:15 in the clip, featuring Medina’s near-perfect ride against Jake Marshall this year. The wave, characterized by its depth and intensity, is widely regarded as almost impossible to surf better—though Medina will undoubtedly strive to surpass it.
As fans anticipate the next waiting period at Teahupo’o in August, hopes are high for another season of perfect conditions to witness Medina continue his unmatched mastery at this legendary break.
