Leeds United have reportedly made a bold move to secure the services of James McAtee from Manchester City. The midfielder, who previously spent two seasons on loan at Sheffield United, returned to Manchester City over the summer. During his time at Sheffield United, McAtee played a crucial role in helping the club secure promotion to the Premier League in 2023, amassing 75 appearances, 14 goals, and eight assists.
Upon his return to Manchester City, McAtee earned praise from manager Pep Guardiola, who seemed poised to give the 22-year-old an opportunity to compete for a spot in the team’s talent-laden squad. However, McAtee’s playing time in the Premier League has been minimal, with just one appearance this season—a brief substitute cameo against Ipswich Town.
Leeds United have shown interest in a potential loan deal for McAtee, while West Ham United have been linked with a permanent transfer. Other clubs, such as Fulham, are also reportedly monitoring the situation. Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson commented that Leeds had made an ambitious offer for McAtee, but acknowledged the competition from other interested clubs. Robinson speculated that McAtee could command a transfer fee in the range of £20-30 million if he were to leave Manchester City permanently.
Despite the interest from other clubs, Robinson suggested that Guardiola might choose to retain McAtee for the remainder of the season, citing the team’s injury issues and McAtee’s potential value to the squad. He noted that McAtee’s talent should have already earned him a more prominent role in the team, given the opportunities created by injuries this season.
This situation highlights McAtee’s growing reputation as a promising young player, with several clubs vying for his services as the January transfer window approaches.
