Mick Fanning, an iconic figure in Australian surfing, has been announced as the ambassador for Queensland’s first public surfing wave park. The $300 million Palm Valley development, located at Parkwood on the Gold Coast, aims to combine surfing and golf with a host of other attractions. The project will also feature a revamped Parkwood International golf course, a hotel resort, dining establishments, retail outlets, and a variety of sporting facilities.
The wave pool, a key part of the project, will cost $120 million and use advanced Endless Surf technology. This system has already been implemented in Germany’s first surfing pool in Munich. Construction of the wave pool is expected to begin next year, with the entire development set to be completed by 2027, aligning with the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
During an appearance on a morning television program, Fanning shared his enthusiasm for the initiative. He highlighted his experience testing the Endless Surf technology in Munich, describing the pool as accessible to surfers of all skill levels, including professionals, beginners, and those with disabilities. Fanning expressed his excitement for the park’s potential to serve as a training venue for Olympic athletes, with its integrated gyms and high-performance centers. The close proximity of the ocean, just seven minutes away, adds to the facility’s appeal.
Fanning also provided a personal update, mentioning his four-year-old son, Xander, who is already experimenting with surfing. While Xander currently enjoys playing on the shore, Fanning is optimistic about his son’s enthusiasm once the wave pool is operational.
In addition to his role as ambassador, Fanning disclosed that he is a financial backer of the project. He explained that his business ventures focus on projects he personally uses and believes in. With the wave park, Fanning sees a daily-use opportunity and expressed excitement for the journey ahead.
