Edu, Arsenal’s sporting director, has officially stepped down, signaling the end of his time with the club. This move is seen as an abrupt finish to his influence at Arsenal, as he prepares to link up with Evangelos Marinakis, the owner of Nottingham Forest. His new role is expected to involve overseeing Marinakis’ trio of clubs: Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos, and Rio Ave. While an official announcement of Edu’s appointment has yet to be made, it’s widely reported that he’s already been removed from Arsenal’s internal groups, including those focused on transfers and player fitness.
As part of his departure, Edu will observe a six-month gardening leave period, preventing him from engaging in day-to-day activities at Arsenal, attending games, or visiting the training ground. This period might delay his official start with Marinakis’ clubs unless a significant compensation package is arranged.
Edu’s history with Arsenal spans back to his playing days, and he returned in 2019 in an executive role as technical director, later advancing to the position of sporting director. His work in recent years, particularly his close collaboration with manager Mikel Arteta, was pivotal in reestablishing Arsenal as a top contender in the Premier League.
In the club’s statement about his departure, Edu shared that the decision was difficult but expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to Arsenal’s success. He highlighted his friendships within the club, especially with Arteta, and conveyed his best wishes for the club’s future.
Arteta also expressed his appreciation for Edu, reflecting on their strong partnership and shared journey. He noted that Edu’s new opportunity represents a significant professional step and extended his heartfelt support for Edu’s future endeavors.
