The 2024 TCS New York Marathon, set for November 3, promises to captivate fans with top-tier athletes and inspiring stories. Among those running for more than personal accomplishment is Matt Gouise from Attleboro, Massachusetts, who’s competing for a heartfelt cause. A special education teacher, Gouise is dedicated to raising awareness and support for individuals with Down Syndrome, a mission fueled by his daughter Cecilia, who lives with the genetic disorder.
Gouise has previously participated in four of the six major marathons, amassing $50,000 in donations to aid Down Syndrome research and support. His motivation stems from his desire to show his daughter that she can achieve anything, no matter the obstacles. “I don’t just show up to these races and float through 26.2 miles,” Gouise explains. “It’s a hard effort, and that’s partly why we do this. It’s to show Cecilia that you can do hard things, that every step you take moves you closer to where you’re going.”
This year’s race also features notable athletes, including marathon champion Hellen Obiri, who will defend her title, and three-time Olympic gold medalist Gabby Thomas, who will serve as the event’s Grand Marshal. Additionally, Tamirat Tola, Ethiopia’s 2024 Paris Olympic marathon gold medalist, aims to defend his title, while celebrity runners like actress Jennifer Connelly add a star-studded element to the race.
Gouise’s dedication highlights the NYC Marathon as a platform for meaningful causes, drawing attention to health issues while emphasizing the collective strength of runners and supporters. As Gouise gears up to race through New York’s five boroughs, he’s reminded that his journey is more than just a race—it’s a message for his daughter and all those impacted by Down Syndrome.
