Heartbreaking Surfing Incident Leads Bethany Hamilton to Seek Community’s Help as 3-Year-Old Nephew Battles for Life

Bethany Hamilton, a professional surfer known for overcoming tremendous adversity, understands the importance of timely action in life-threatening situations better than most. On the morning of October 31, 2003, when she was just 13 years old, she experienced a horrific event that changed her life forever. While surfing at Tunnels Beach, she was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark. Despite the severity of the attack, she was quickly helped back to shore by those nearby.

The shark had severely injured her left arm, and by the time she was rushed to Wilcox Medical Center, she had already lost 60% of her blood. Hamilton’s recovery was remarkable, and she eventually returned to surfing, but she lost her left arm from the shoulder as a result of the attack. Her story of resilience highlights the critical role that immediate medical attention played in saving her life.

Now, in a heart-wrenching coincidence, Bethany Hamilton once again finds herself relying on timely medical intervention. On October 13, she took to Instagram to ask for help for her 3-year-old nephew, Andrew, who had a tragic accident on the evening of October 11. According to her post, Andrew drowned but was later pulled out of the water, unconscious. The following morning, on October 12, Andrew was airlifted to Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women & Children in Honolulu for urgent medical care.
