Gold Over America Tour choreographer explains why Simone Biles was the perfect star to bring the idea to life

A new gymnastics tour, “GOAT,” is on the road, exciting fans across the country with its unique blend of gymnastics and live entertainment. The tour was conceived by director and choreographer Mark Swanhart, known for his work with The Rolling Stones and Disney. Following the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Swanhart envisioned a fresh approach that would combine the elegance and athleticism of gymnastics with theatrical elements, bringing the sport to life for audiences outside of the traditional competitive setting. He immediately saw Simone Biles as the perfect figure to lead this innovative project.

Swanhart and his team invited Biles to join the tour and bring along some of the top gymnasts. Since launching on September 16, the tour has made seven stops, with the next scheduled for Minneapolis on September 27. Swanhart, excited to bring the show to his home state, believes this version of the tour offers something new and captivating for the audience, different from what they’ve seen in the Olympics.

The tour features a star-studded lineup alongside Biles, including Olympians Jordan Chiles and Jade Carey, as well as standout collegiate gymnasts like Ian Gunther from Stanford and Brody Malone. Although Biles won’t perform at every show, the performances are meticulously curated to ensure a memorable and dynamic experience for all attendees.

Swanhart emphasized that the tour aims to provide a fresh perspective on gymnastics, which can sometimes feel rigid in competitive formats. This show incorporates music and engaging choreography, including a segment designed to make the audience feel as though they are at the Olympics. The overall experience promises to be far more entertaining and immersive than traditional gymnastics competitions.
