BOK WOMEN DETERMINED TO FINISH 2024 ON A HIGH

The Springbok Women are gearing up for their final WXV 2 match of the season against Italy at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, with a focus on ending the year on a positive note. Despite last year’s loss to Italy, the team is determined to finish strong in this crucial game. Loose forward Catha Jacobs emphasized the team’s growth over the season, expressing their desire to cap off a solid year with a victory in their final Test.

In their WXV 2 campaign so far, the Springbok Women have won against Japan and narrowly lost to Australia, both games decided by seven-point margins. Jacobs, reflecting on the team’s progress, said they are determined to finish the season on a high. She noted that their training camp in Gqeberha has been productive, with the team meeting most of their objectives and preparing well for the upcoming game.

Jacobs, who plays for Leicester Tigers Women, is familiar with some of Italy’s players, either as teammates or rivals in the English league. She acknowledged Italy’s strengths, particularly their skilled backline and solid forward pack, but also highlighted areas where the South Africans could exploit weaknesses. According to Jacobs, the Springbok Women will stick to their tried-and-tested strategies but will also introduce new elements to their game.

The forward pack has been a key source of possession for the South Africans, and this will continue to be a focus. However, Jacobs hinted that the team will be looking to add more variety to their play in an effort to grow. She stressed that they are not approaching this game with any intention of losing.

Last year’s match against Italy in the same competition ended in a frustrating loss for the Springbok Women, but Jacobs is confident that this time will be different. The team is determined to secure a convincing win, which would provide a boost as they head into preparations for next year’s Rugby World Cup. Ending the year on a high note is the team’s goal, and they are focused on achieving that this weekend.
