Daniel Farke drops hint on Leeds United transfer plans after ‘horrendous’ news at Elland Road this week

Leeds United found a promising midfield partnership in Joe Rothwell and Ao Tanaka during their 2-2 draw with Sunderland. Both players, signed during the summer transfer window, started together for the first time following injuries to key players Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev. Although initially brought in to compete for the more advanced midfield roles and add attacking depth, Tanaka and Rothwell were forced into different responsibilities. Tanaka was deployed as a defensive midfielder, sitting just in front of the defense, while Rothwell played in a more advanced position.

Though Leeds’ midfield lacked the defensive solidity seen in previous games, both players put in strong performances. Tanaka was highly active in both offensive and defensive phases, while Rothwell frequently looked to advance play forward.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke acknowledged the effectiveness of the pairing but expressed concern about the demands of having them play every week, especially given the recent injury setbacks. If one of them were to get injured, the only available alternative in that position would be young Charlie Crew, who is highly regarded but not yet trusted for regular first-team action. Crew has been on the bench multiple times but has not made it onto the pitch yet.

Farke also indicated a possible change in the club’s transfer plans, particularly following the long-term absence of Gruev, who is set to undergo surgery. Initially hesitant about signing free agents in October, Farke now appears more open to the idea given the current situation. He mentioned that it is the club’s responsibility to explore any available options, especially as both of Leeds’ deep-lying midfielders will be unavailable for an extended period.

A more defensively minded midfielder would be ideal for Leeds, but with limited options in the free-agent market, Farke acknowledged that they might not be able to afford being selective. Many available free agents are older players who would need time to regain full fitness.

One potential option could be Edouard Michut, a 21-year-old midfielder who is currently a free agent after leaving Adana Demirspor due to unpaid wages. Michut, who was previously a target for Leeds last summer, has experience in the Championship, having played at Sunderland. If signed, Michut could offer competition for Rothwell in a more advanced role, while Charlie Crew could serve as backup for Tanaka in the defensive midfield position.
