Why Were Lionel Messi & Inter Miami Not Presented With Supporters’ Shield Trophy After Beating Columbus Crew? Unpacking the Controversial Decision!

Inter Miami has officially been crowned the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield winners after a hard-fought season. However, despite their win over Columbus Crew, the team did not receive the trophy on the field. Reports indicate that the Shield may have been in Columbus, and the players celebrated with it privately in the locker room, without a formal post-game presentation.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that none of Miami’s supporter groups are members of the Independent Supporters Council (ISC), the organization responsible for maintaining the Shield. While four groups have applied to join the ISC, approval may take time, leaving last season’s holders, FC Cincinnati, technically still recognized as champions for now.

This issue has created controversy, delaying Miami’s full recognition as Supporters’ Shield winners. Fans might have to wait until their final home game on October 20 against the New England Revolution to see the trophy presented. Until then, Inter Miami must resolve their standing with the ISC to officially showcase their first-ever Supporters’ Shield.
