An insider suggests that a crucial decision made by Deion Sanders may have prevented Travis Hunter from winning the Heisman Trophy.

Deion Sanders has been under scrutiny since taking the helm at Colorado, where he revitalized the program and brought attention to players like his son Shedeur Sanders and two-way standout Travis Hunter. However, concerns have arisen that Coach Prime’s decision to choose the Big 12 over more competitive conferences like the SEC or Big Ten may hinder Hunter’s chances of winning the Heisman Trophy.

Jason Whitlock, in a discussion on his YouTube show, questioned whether Hunter can truly be considered the best player in college football when he isn’t facing the elite talent found in the SEC. The level of competition in the SEC, with its NFL-caliber players and complex defenses, could have provided the national exposure and elevated stage necessary for Heisman consideration.

Hunter, who has been a standout on both offense and defense with impressive stats, may not be getting the same attention as players in more prominent conferences. Historically, players like Charles Woodson, who won the Heisman in 1997, played in spotlight conferences and benefitted from special plays. In contrast, Hunter’s remarkable contributions, including playing over 120 snaps per game, may not be enough to capture Heisman voters’ attention while playing in the Big 12.

Though Sanders’ choice of the Big 12 might have been strategic for other reasons, it may inadvertently reduce the visibility Hunter needs to secure a Heisman win. While Hunter remains a top talent, the decision could limit his exposure compared to players in the SEC or Big Ten, where the competition is often more visible and influential in the Heisman

race.
