Coco Gauff Expands Her Historic Repertoire With a Commanding China Open Win as She Joins WTA Legend Caroline Wozniacki

Coco Gauff has found a new spark in her career after a challenging period, following her departure from coach Brad Gilbert. Now working with her new coach, Matt Daly, Gauff has achieved her first victory since the US Open. Her recent win in China is more than just a success—it has set a new milestone in her career, placing her alongside Caroline Wozniacki. Gauff surprised many by securing a place next to the Danish tennis star, an achievement that promises a bright future for the young American, who many hope will continue the legacy of the Williams sisters.

In the 2024 China Open, Gauff defeated France’s Clara Burel in the first round, marking an important career milestone. With this win, she joined Caroline Wozniacki in achieving 46 hard-court victories before the age of 21. Wozniacki, a former Australian Open champion, had reached the same number of wins before turning 21. Gauff’s accomplishment came after she beat Burel in straight sets, 7-5 and 6-3.

The WTA celebrated Gauff’s achievement on their social media, sharing the news with fans. They posted Gauff’s picture and highlighted the fact that she now shares the top spot on the WTA 1000 hard-court leaderboard with Wozniacki, thanks to her 46 wins.

Despite a disappointing season leading up to this victory, Gauff has bounced back. Earlier in the year, she struggled, especially with her serve, including a difficult run at the US Open, where she exited in the round of 16. Of her 46 career hard-court victories, only 10 came from this season. Nonetheless, she seems to have moved past these setbacks, demonstrating her resilience in China.

After parting ways with Brad Gilbert following the US Open, Gauff’s future seemed uncertain. However, she soon introduced Matt Daly as her new coach, working alongside Jean-Christophe Faurel. With this new coaching team, Gauff appears ready to regain her form. Prior to the China Open, she took a short vacation with her mother, which helped her mentally refresh for the tournament.

Gauff and her mother, Candi, spent time visiting the Great Wall of China, where they shared lighthearted moments. Gauff joked about her mother’s photography skills, while Candi reflected on their bond in an Instagram post, coinciding with National Daughter’s Day. Their trip to various historical sites, including the Forbidden City, seemed to rejuvenate Gauff, preparing her for her latest victory.

This victory at the China Open has many excited about Gauff’s potential moving forward. The question now is whether she will simply follow in Wozniacki’s footsteps or surpass the Danish star’s legacy. Many believe that with her recent form, Gauff is poised for great things.
