Gervonta Davis Team Snubbed This Shakur Stevenson Opponent for Lamont Roach Title Fight

Gervonta Davis, the WBA lightweight champion, is preparing for his next fight after returning to the ring in June following a long break after his bout with Ryan Garcia last year. Keen to avoid ring rust, Davis is aiming for another match in December. While his initial preference was a unification fight with Ukrainian boxer Vasyl Lomachenko, negotiations fell through as Lomachenko wanted more family time.

According to recent reports, Lamont Roach, the WBA super featherweight champion, is now the leading contender for Davis’ next fight, with Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela also in the running. Roach would need to move up from the super featherweight division to the lightweight division to challenge Davis. Edwin De Los Santos, who previously fought Shakur Stevenson, was also considered for a potential bout, but Davis’ team ultimately opted for Roach.

Boxing legend Zab Judah supported the choice of Roach, considering it a logical decision. However, some critics, including Devin Haney, reacted to Davis’ selection with mockery. Haney’s reaction on social media was met with a sharp response from Davis, who pointed out his decisive victory over Ryan Garcia compared to Haney’s contested fight against Garcia, which ended in a majority decision win for Haney, later overturned to a no-contest.

As the fight plans develop, fans are speculating whether Davis will ultimately face Roach or Valenzuela. Both potential opponents present unique challenges, with Roach having to adjust to a higher weight class, possibly making him a more favorable option for Davis.
