NCHE: BOK PACK “EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED”

Springbok prop Ox Nche shared that the team’s approach to their set pieces ahead of their crucial Rugby Championship clash against Argentina was centered on the theme of “expect the unexpected.” The two teams are preparing for a highly anticipated match at the Estadio Unico Madre Ciudades in Santiago del Estero. This encounter marks the penultimate fixture in the competition, with both teams still vying for the title.

For the Springboks, a win would secure their first Championship title since 2019, even before their final match at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit the following week. However, a defeat would set up a high-stakes final match, as South Africa currently holds an eight-point lead over Argentina in the standings.

Nche emphasized the need to be ready for anything in Argentina’s set pieces, acknowledging the Pumas’ growth in forward play. He noted their ability to utilize a variety of tactics in the lineouts, including attacking from both the front and back, as well as their strength in mauling. This versatile style makes them a well-rounded team, posing a significant challenge for the Springboks.

Springbok lock Ruan Nortje, set to start alongside captain Salmaan Moerat, also anticipates a physical contest with Argentina’s forward pack. He pointed out the similarities between the two teams, noting that Argentina, much like the Springboks, takes pride in their physical style of play. Despite the challenge, Nortje expressed confidence in the team’s preparations.

Though one of the younger players at 26, Nortje relishes the responsibility of calling the lineouts, a task that comes with pressure but also suits his skills. He acknowledged the quality of the Argentine pack but believes that sticking to their established systems and structures is key to success.

In anticipation of the game’s potentially hostile environment, Nortje mentioned that the senior players have been preparing the team mentally for the intensity of playing in Argentina. The emphasis is on adjusting their mindsets to handle the pressure and challenges expected in such a setting.

Nche also highlighted the significance of a possible victory in this match, which could clinch the Rugby Championship title for South Africa. He mentioned that winning the competition would be a testament to the consistency and unity the squad has built since their Rugby World Cup win. For the team, success in this tournament would further solidify their progress and ambitions.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 23:00 South African time and will be broadcast live.
