Red Bull driver ‘set to be sacked after Singapore GP’ with replacement ‘already lined up’

A well-known Formula 1 driver may be on the verge of losing his seat, with the change potentially happening before the Singapore Grand Prix. This comes as the F1 drivers’ and constructors’ championships continue to unfold, with the next race set to take place at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore.

McLaren recently claimed the lead in the constructors’ standings after Oscar Piastri’s impressive victory in Baku, accumulating 476 points. They are followed by Red Bull Racing (456 points) and Ferrari (425 points). Meanwhile, Max Verstappen’s lead in the drivers’ standings has narrowed; he currently sits at 313 points, with Lando Norris (254 points) and Charles Leclerc (235 points) chasing him.

There are signs of unrest within Red Bull Racing, and reports suggest that there might be changes in the sister team, Visa Cash App RB (VCARB). Veteran F1 journalist Roger Benoit has hinted that the Singapore GP could be Daniel Ricciardo’s last race for VCARB, with Red Bull Racing’s reserve driver Liam Lawson potentially set to take his place. Benoit remarked that Ricciardo’s F1 career could end in Singapore after 257 races and eight wins, as VCARB has reportedly exercised their option on the 22-year-old Lawson.

While some outlets suggest Lawson might step in as early as the Singapore GP, others argue that Ricciardo’s replacement will happen during the four-week break before the United States Grand Prix on October 20. Additionally, some reports speculate that Red Bull may wait until the 2025 season to make the change. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has acknowledged the situation, indicating that more clarity will emerge after the Singapore GP.

Ricciardo, currently 14th in the drivers’ standings with 12 points, has had a varied career with spells at Red Bull Racing, Renault, McLaren, AlphaTauri, and his recent return to VCARB for the 2024 season.
