Fiji 7s waits on system for $20,000

The payout of $20,000 to the Fiji men’s team, which won a silver medal at the Paris Olympics, has been delayed due to issues with the government’s financial system. Members of the Fiji 7s team have expressed their concern as they have yet to receive the promised sum.

In an interview with FBC Sports, the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, confirmed that the payment is still pending. Saukuru explained that while the necessary funds and logistical arrangements are in place, the delay stems from complications with the government’s newly implemented financial and accounting system. He stated, “The delay is with our financial system, the Ministry of Finances’ new financial system and accounting system, so that’s what is causing the delay at the moment.”

Saukuru also noted that the payment delay is not limited to the Olympic incentive scheme but is affecting various other government projects. This issue highlights a broader challenge within the new financial system managed by the Ministry of Finance.

Before the Olympics, the coalition government had announced a reward structure for medalists, offering $50,000 for a gold medal, $20,000 for silver, and $10,000 for bronze. The Fiji 7s team was honored at the Fiji Sports Awards two weeks ago, where they received a ceremonial cheque, but the actual payment has not yet been processed.

Despite the current delay, Saukuru reassured that efforts are being made to address the problem. The government is working towards completing the payments by the end of the week.
