Report: Spurs will allow Arsenal to have a free run at 24-year-old target

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly stepped away from pursuing a deal for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, potentially giving their North London rivals, Arsenal, a clear opportunity to make a move for the 24-year-old.

Previously, Spurs had shown interest in Isak. However, since they secured the signing of Dominic Solanke, Tottenham no longer appear to be in the market for a traditional number nine. As a result, Arsenal now have a clearer path to approach Newcastle with an offer for the Swedish forward.

A key critique of Arsenal’s current squad under Mikel Arteta is their lack of an out-and-out striker capable of netting 20 goals a season, a feature that rivals Manchester City possess. This gap has prompted speculation that the Gunners could be in the market for a top forward like Isak.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are keen on securing Isak to a new contract, despite him having almost four years remaining on his current deal. Despite these efforts, negotiations have not been successful so far. This situation has left Arsenal watching closely, ready to step in if Newcastle cannot make headway in their contract talks.

Newcastle, who fought their way into the Champions League two seasons ago, failed to secure a European finish last season, adding pressure to keep their star players like Isak.

Despite Spurs dropping their interest, the general consensus is that Newcastle will demand a hefty fee for Isak, likely upwards of £100 million. While it remains uncertain if any club would be willing to pay such an amount in the current financial climate, the potential value Isak could bring to Arsenal in their race to catch up with Manchester City makes the price tag a consideration.
