LIV Golf Rumors: Greg Norman-DP World Tour Relations Spoiled Over Jon Rahm’s $1.17M Rebellion

The tension between LIV Golf and the DP World Tour has intensified. While much of the focus has been on the ongoing clash between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, it appears the DP World Tour is also not in favor of the Saudi-backed league. Recent controversy arose when Jon Rahm contested the fines imposed on him, and surprisingly, Greg Norman backed his decision. However, the situation has shifted dramatically.

According to a source, it was revealed that LIV Golf attempted to negotiate a deal with the DP World Tour prior to Rahm’s recent appeal of his sanctions. This proposed deal involved waiving penalties for LIV Golf players, offering certain concessions, and providing financial compensation to the DP World Tour. However, a spokesperson for the DP World Tour confirmed that the offer was declined. The official stated, “We met with them and listened to their proposal but did not accept it, as our view remains that the focus should continue to be on all stakeholders working together to reach an overall solution that benefits our sport.”

The controversy surrounding Rahm’s fines has further exposed the divide between LIV Golf and the DP World Tour. Rahm, who reportedly owes around $1 million in fines, appealed the penalties to allow him to participate in upcoming events, but his appeal was ultimately unsuccessful, as many had anticipated. According to a source, “They are hurting their own events and their own sponsors,” indicating that the DP World Tour’s enforcement of penalties against LIV Golf players could be counterproductive and damaging to their events.

Rahm questioned why he was allowed to appeal when others earlier this year had to pay their fines. His frustration over the situation even led him to consider withdrawing from his country’s Open and the Ryder Cup. LIV Golf has already paid £12 million ($15.75 million) in fines for players to participate in DP World Tour events, with £10 million still outstanding. Rahm’s appeal was a long shot, given a previous U.K. arbitration ruling that had granted the DP World Tour the right to enforce these penalties.

The ongoing penalties present a significant challenge for Jon Rahm. To maintain his DP World Tour membership, he needs to compete in at least four non-major events, with three more required for the current year and the same condition for 2025. The pressure is mounting, as failure to meet these requirements could result in his fines escalating further.

The DP World Tour’s strict stance is largely influenced by its close partnership with the PGA Tour, which has a considerable stake in European Tour Productions and collaborates in several events. Currently, the PGA Tour is in discussions with LIV Golf’s backers, the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, while the DP World Tour watches from the sidelines, hoping for a positive resolution. If these talks fall through, Rahm’s ambitions of playing in the Ryder Cup could be jeopardized, adding further drama to his situation. As one of golf’s biggest stars, his potential exclusion from the Ryder Cup would be a major blow.

Jon Rahm’s predicament is a developing story, with much at stake for both his career and the wider golf world. Will he find a way out of this dilemma, or will he have to relinquish his Ryder Cup aspirations? The world of golf waits to see how this will unfold.
