Sha’Carri Richardson pulls out of women’s 200m

Sha’Carri Richardson will not participate in the 200m race at the Diamond League Final in Brussels on Saturday, September 14th. The American sprinter, who won the 100m world championship last year, struggled in the 100m event the day before. In the chilly conditions, she finished eighth, significantly behind Olympic gold medalist Julien Alfred.

Richardson was initially scheduled to compete in the 200m race, but her name was unexpectedly absent from the official online start list by around 2:00 PM local time. Dutch sprinter Tasa Jiya was listed as her replacement.

During the 100m race, Richardson had a slow start and could not gain enough speed, crossing the finish line in 11.23 seconds. Julien Alfred secured victory with a time of 10.88 seconds. British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith came in second, followed by Marie-Josée Ta Lou. The latter, an experienced Ivorian sprinter, was also set to compete in the 200m alongside Brittany Brown, who won the bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

In another event, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, fresh from winning an invitational 400m race on Friday, was scheduled to participate in a 200m event before the main Diamond League track finals commenced.

Prominent athletes and personalities have commented on Richardson’s performances, with legendary track star Jackie Joyner-Kersee expressing her admiration for how Richardson competes. The Diamond League 2024 continues to feature a diverse lineup of disciplines and athletes.
