Elon Musk Helps Track & Field Community After Announcing Unexpected Update for Alexis Ohanian’s Event

Alexis Ohanian’s track and field event, initially known as the **766 Invitational**, was first introduced in April 2024. The competition is designed to bring together some of the fastest women athletes in the world for the first-ever female-only track meet. With one of the largest prize pools for a track event of its kind, the competition has since been rebranded as **Athlos NYC**. Scheduled for **September 26th**, the event promises to reshape the viewing experience for track and field fans globally, and it seems to be making strides in that direction.

As the date nears, **RunBlogRun** announced a surprise update on **X** (formerly Twitter), revealing that Athlos would be streaming live on the platform. Ohanian provided more insight into this decision, explaining that many fans of women’s sports face obstacles like paywalls or are unaware of when events are happening. With the help of **Elon Musk**, Athlos has addressed this issue by partnering with global media outlets to broadcast the race. Ohanian emphasized that Athlos is going “big—and accessible” for viewers.

Fans will be able to watch the event on several platforms, including **YouTube**, **X**, **ESPN**, and **DAZN**. For those who prefer traditional cable television, the event will also be re-broadcast on **ESPN 2** on **September 29th**. Ohanian made it clear that the goal is to allow anyone, anywhere, with an internet connection to tune in, thereby giving greater visibility to women’s sports.

The partnership with media giants like **ESPN** and **DAZN** is part of Ohanian’s broader strategy to highlight the talents of female track athletes. Notable athletes such as **Gabby Thomas**, **Faith Kipyegon**, **Alexis Holmes**, and **Tori Lewis** will participate, with Thomas being one of the first athletes confirmed for the event. Ohanian was particularly inspired by Thomas’ performance at the Olympic Trials, which fueled his drive to promote women’s sports even further.

In addition to promoting accessibility, **Athlos NYC** is offering significant financial incentives. All 36 participants will receive cash prizes, with the 6th place finisher taking home $2,500 and the winner earning a substantial **$60,000**. As a special touch, the champion will also receive a crown from **Tiffany & Co.**. Though Ohanian acknowledges that these prize amounts may seem modest, he sees this as the starting point for his larger vision.

Ohanian’s passion for supporting women’s sports stems, in part, from his role as the husband of tennis legend **Serena Williams**, where he often found himself deeply invested in her matches. He even compared watching Gabby Thomas’ trials to the intensity of Serena’s Grand Slam matches, referring to it as “Grand Slam PTSD.”

Thomas has also been vocal about the need for greater visibility in track and field, saying that the first step toward change is ensuring people have basic access to watch the sport. Ohanian, in partnership with Musk, aims to transform the viewing experience and bring track and field into the digital age. Athlos NYC is already being hailed as a potential game-changer in women’s athletics.
