‘I Had Diabetes’: Tiger Woods’s Insensitive Joke on John Daly Once Led to a Remorseful Confrontation

John Daly and Tiger Woods have had a relationship that is often difficult to understand. While they’ve referred to each other as friends ever since they both began playing on the PGA Tour, the media has frequently pointed to a rift between the two. Their dynamic became a particular point of interest during the 2019 PGA Championship.

In that tournament, John Daly was given permission to use a golf cart to move around the course, which is generally not allowed in major tournaments or Tour-sanctioned events. This exception was made due to Daly’s arthritis, a condition that had worsened after multiple surgeries. During a press conference, Tiger Woods was asked about Daly’s use of a cart, and he responded, “As far as J.D. taking a cart, well, I walked with a broken leg, so…” Woods was referring to his remarkable 2008 U.S. Open victory, where he played and won despite a broken leg. The comment seemed to suggest that Woods disapproved of Daly’s use of a cart, implying that professional golfers should tough it out, even with physical limitations.

To many, Woods’ remark sounded insensitive, particularly when it came to Daly’s health. However, Daly later clarified that Woods’ comment wasn’t as harsh as it appeared. On the *Full Send* podcast in 2022, Daly addressed the situation, explaining that Woods hadn’t known the full extent of his health problems. Daly shared that the media had failed to inform Woods that he was not only dealing with arthritis but also had diabetes, bad knees, and hip issues. Once Woods learned about Daly’s health struggles, he personally apologized to Daly over dinner during the PNC Championship. Daly recounted that Woods’ apology smoothed things over, and he expressed no hard feelings, even stating, “I love Tiger.”

Daly further confirmed their friendship, revealing that Woods was one of the few people, besides Justin Thomas, who reached out to him after his 2021 accident. Woods later acknowledged that Daly’s gesture had meant a lot to him, strengthening the bond between the two.

Despite what the media might suggest, Daly emphasized that he and Woods share a deep friendship, both on and off the course. They often express admiration for each other’s unique talents. Daly has praised Woods for his extraordinary work ethic, while Woods has acknowledged Daly’s immense golfing talent, even if their approaches to the game differ greatly.

One of the most memorable moments between the two occurred during the 2004 Target World Challenge (now known as the Hero World Challenge). Daly was sitting in the locker room drinking beer, and Woods happened to pass by. Daly invited Woods to join him, but Woods declined. However, before leaving, Woods offered Daly a huge compliment, saying, “If I had your talent, I’d be doing the same thing you’re doing.” Daly was taken aback by Woods’ words, marveling at the compliment from the golf legend himself. This exchange highlighted the mutual respect between the two.

While the media often portrays friction between Daly and Woods, the truth appears to be quite the opposite. Their friendship is grounded in mutual admiration, and even though their approaches to golf and life differ, both men respect each other’s abilities. Woods has commended Daly for his natural talent, and Daly, in turn, looks up to Woods’ unmatched dedication to the game. The pair continue to maintain a bond that goes beyond what is often depicted by the media.
