Adrian Newey hits out at Sky Sports over treatment of Red Bull star Max Verstappen

Adrian Newey, the renowned Formula 1 designer who played a pivotal role in Red Bull’s success and Max Verstappen’s three world titles, has criticized Sky Sports for their allegedly negative portrayal of Verstappen. Newey, who recently joined Aston Martin as a shareholder and technical managing partner, suggested that the broadcaster’s coverage has been biased against the Dutch driver. After rejecting Ferrari’s offer, Newey signed a lucrative five-year deal with Aston Martin worth up to £30 million annually.

During a grand press conference typically reserved for significant driver announcements or car unveilings, Aston Martin confirmed Newey’s move. Known for designing championship-winning cars at Williams and McLaren, Newey has formed strong bonds with top drivers like Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel, both of whom have had high-profile rivalries with Lewis Hamilton. Currently, Verstappen is locked in a title battle with Lando Norris.

In a recent interview on the *High Performance* podcast, Newey addressed the negative image painted of both Verstappen and Vettel, pointing out how British media unfairly “demonized” them. He particularly singled out Sky Sports, noting that while their F1 coverage is international, it often takes a nationalistic tone, which can influence global perspectives on certain drivers. Newey compared this treatment to how Vettel was also misrepresented during his dominant years.

Sky Sports and Red Bull have had a strained relationship in the past. Notably, in 2022, Red Bull boycotted Sky’s coverage for one race after pitlane reporter Ted Kravitz suggested in his *Ted’s Notebook* segment that Hamilton was “robbed” of the 2021 championship in the controversial finish orchestrated by former race director Michael Masi. This incident further strained Red Bull’s relationship with the broadcaster.

Despite leaving Red Bull, there is speculation that Newey and Verstappen could reunite at Aston Martin in 2026, coinciding with a new set of F1 regulations. Aston Martin’s billionaire owner, Lawrence Stroll, has reportedly initiated talks with Verstappen’s team, although the driver is currently under contract with Red Bull until 2028. However, there are rumors that his contract may include clauses allowing him to leave early.

Stroll, who called Newey a “bargain” in Aston Martin’s quest for the F1 title, sees the designer as a key asset to the team’s future success.
