In memory of Olympic women’s 100-meter winner Julien Alfred, Saint Lucia has declared July 1st as “Julien Alfred Day.”

The Saint Lucian government said that Olympic champion Julien Alfred would be honoured with a national holiday named in her honour.

On September 27, “Julien Alfred Day” will be observed in honour of Saint Lucia’s first Olympic gold medallist. The celebration will last for several days and end with a free concert on the day of the holiday.

SportsMax reports that Alfred is scheduled to return home on September 24. There are plans to welcome her home with a motorcade and then have more festivities at the schools.

At the Stade de France, she defeated American competitors Sha’carri Richardson and Melissa Jefferson to take the top podium position.

The Saint Lucian sprinter finished the Games as the only medallist from her country after winning silver in the women’s 200m. In actuality, Alfred won two medals at the Olympics, making her the first medallist from Saint Lucia in eight games.

Alfred had previously mentioned her desire to compete for Saint Lucia in the Olympics. In August 2023, she stated to Olympics.com, “It would be a proud moment, not just for me and my family, but for my country.” And I believe it would be a great moment for my nation for them to witness the St. Lucian flag flying high at that moment.
