In an interview with Nasdaq that was posted on their YouTube channel on September 6, Jordan Chiles responds to the question, “I think that gymnastics is more often a mental sport than a physical one.” The 23-year-old gymnast said, “One hundred percent,” in agreement with that. Chiles went on to say that this seems to be a general feature that applies to the majority of sports.

“It’s not even like gymnastics in general, since I’ve seen pitchers lose their throwing mojo on occasion. Sometimes a hitter simply does not know how to hit. There have been instances when making three-pointers has not come naturally to you. Therefore, I believe that the majority of what’s happening to you is just mental, and it can have an impact on you,” she said.
There is always a correlation between a player’s performance and their mental state. That’s why it came as a huge blow to Jordan Chiles in 2023 when she went through a difficult period following the deaths of two close ones. Her performances on the mats also showed the effects of her mental collapse. “I didn’t know how to cope with that,” she said. It wasn’t clear to me whether or not it was real. I had no idea what was going on. However, it did ruin my sport. thus the game is mental in nature.
Chiles had a trying period in his life in 2023. The loss of her grandfather and aunt devastated her. And she had acknowledged that it was not her best moment. She didn’t know how far along she was in her recovery and why the ideas would come to her on occasion. She has previously admitted, “Some days I feel wonderful, and then on days like making my second Olympics, I was so pleased and then I was sorry that they weren’t there to witness it.”
