Sprint legend Michael Johnson on the ‘authentic’ star power of Sha’Carri Richardson

Sha’Carri Richardson enjoys being on a large stage.

With her striking appearance and exceptional athletic ability, the sprinter always commands attention while she’s on the track.

Following a brilliant 2023 in which she won the world title in the women’s 100 meters, the native of Texas made her Olympic debut in Paris 2024, where she won silver in the 100 meters and helped Team USA win gold in the 4×100 meters relay.

Richardson is back in action after a little hiatus after the Games and is scheduled to take centre stage in the Diamond League Meeting in Zurich on September 5.

The 24-year-old is bringing greater attention to the sport, and fans will be thrilled to see her in Switzerland. Before Paris 2024, sprint star Michael Johnson discusses why he thinks she has been such a success both on and off the track in an exclusive interview with Olympics.com.

The four-time Olympic winner stated, “I think Sha’Carri is a really good example of an athlete that is not emulating any prior greats to make an effect in the sport.”

“Those who are just being true to themselves have the most influence. She is undoubtedly that—an remarkable talent who has travelled a different path to truly discover her potential on the track and take home medals. She’s a great talent and perhaps one of the most interesting athletes.

Michael Johnson: Don’t compare yourself to Usain Bolt anymore

Athletics fans have been searching for someone to replace Usain Bolt in the sport since his retirement.

Richardson and Noah Lyles are two of the most well-known sprinters competing right now, but Johnson thinks it’s useless to draw comparisons between them.

Every athlete, in his opinion, adds something unique to the mix, so it is hard to copy a skill like Bolt’s.

“I think we should just put the subject of who will be the next Bolt to rest. To that, I can respond, nobody. There will never be a second Usain Bolt. That does not imply that the sport will be devoid of remarkable figures and achievements. There’s going to be. Johnson went on, “But Bolt was special because he’s Usain Bolt and no one else can beat him.

“I believe that other people will influence the sport in a different way. In the same way that Carl Lewis had an impact on the game that was distinct from mine, and that his had on the game. However, I believe that since they are such fascinating people, the new sprinters are leaving their own special imprint on the sport.

In 2024, Sha’Carri Richardson is travelling to Paris. I’ve continued to be true to myself.

As the 100-meter world champion and heavy favourite for gold, Julien Alfred Richardson arrived for a repeat in Paris 2024.

Still, she was stunned by Julien Alfred of St. Lucia and failed to win double gold in Paris 2024.

Although the two teams’ meeting in Zurich provides for an intriguing plotline, Richardson’s reaction to a dismal defeat in the French capital will be crucial.

The 5-foot-2 (1.57m) sprinter is motivated to show that she possesses the consistency required to excel on the track.

“I believe that she benefited greatly both as an athlete and as a person by winning the world championship last year. I believe it greatly benefited her. We get to watch her, so it’s been fantastic for us,” Johnson went on.

“Let’s see if she can start winning titles consistently this summer and become into a serial champion. That won’t be simple, as the women’s 100-meter event is arguably one of the hardest. It will be fascinating to observe.
