Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have an unshakeable bond that demonstrates how true friendship can stand the test of time. As Nadal nears the end of his storied career, Federer has offered nothing but steadfast support for his long-time opponent and buddy. When asked about Nadal’s impending retirement, Federer showed confidence in his decision.

The Swiss maestro recently spoke with Today, and was asked about Rafael Nadal’s retirement. He stated, “I just chatted with him last week. He wanted to ask me something, and we talked, and I felt a little sad for him. That his summer did not go as expected due to a bad draw at the French Open. He also got a difficult draw at the Olympics.”

He went on to say, “I believe he was trying to make a medal. Of course, it was Alcaraz in the doubles. I am also thinking about making a medal. I told him that he is one of the most legendary tennis players in history, and he can do whatever he wants. “I just hope he can go out on his own terms and the way he wants to, but he’s a terrific guy with a great career.”

Earlier last year, Federer intimated that Rafael Nadal would surprise everyone by playing beyond his expected retirement date. Although the Spaniard has not officially announced his retirement date, he has definitely intimated that this could be his final season on tour. With 22 Grand Slam titles, Nadal is second all-time in the men’s category, trailing only Novak Djokovic.

Federer, like many tennis fans, wishes Nadal might continue his incredible career a little longer, adding more memorable moments to his illustrious resume. “He can determine how he wants to do it. I don’t have any information on that, but I’m hoping he’ll play much longer than we expect. But the question is his physicality, as he candidly admits,” the 43-year-old stated. While Nadal has not officially confirmed his retirement, he recently stated that his “objectives for the year are over.”

Rafael Nadal had a hip injury at the 2023 Australian Open, which sidelined him for more than a year. Following his comeback at the Brisbane International this season, he was forced to miss crucial events such as the Australian Open, Indian Wells, and Miami Open due to an injury acquired during his quarterfinal match against Jordan Thompson in Brisbane. Though it was widely believed that Rafael Nadal would declare his retirement at the end of the year, the 22-time Major winner has yet to make an official declaration.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion recently stated that he did not achieve the goals he set for himself this year. Reflecting on his difficult season, he stated, “My goals for the year are done, and I haven’t accomplished everything I would have hoped to. I train every day and enjoy other aspects of my life.

Nadal has not played since his previous appearance at the Paris Games, and he has also withdrawn from the ongoing 2024 US Open. Despite missing these two events, he has announced his participation in the 2024 Laver Cup, demonstrating that he still has some competitive tennis left in him
