While the top-seeded Liberty suffered a 94-88 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks, they bounced back to dominate the Storm with a decisive 98-85 victory.
The win for the Liberty came partly because of reigning MVP Breanna Stewart, who dominated throughout the match yesterday—becoming the first Lib to score 30+ points in consecutive games. Even the entire team showcased improved ball movement and spacing, which helped overcome a brief lapse that allowed the Storm to take the lead.
However, what truly anchored Liberty’s victory and overall performance was Sabrina Ionescu‘s 25 points, 8 assists, and 8 rebounds. The New York Liberty will now return home to face the Seattle Storm again on September 5th, building on their success yesterday. It will also be a pivotal moment for the team to secure a top position in the playoffs.
While the NY Liberty goes into the much-deserved rest period, Floyd Mayweather shared his winnings from the game on social media. It’s worth noting that despite the NY Liberty’s previous loss to the Los Angeles Sparks, they were the favorites going into the game yesterday. So, ‘Money’ made a safe bate to wager on the predicted winner.
Turning to his Instagram story earlier today, the five-division champion shared a picture of his receipt showcasing his $190,000 winnings from the game. Mayweather seems to have put in $100,000 and won $90,000 from the game. Boasting on his win, he captioned the story, “Light Pick Up.” However, this doesn’t mean Mayweather’s luck has always shined on him.
Floyd Mayweather blasts ESPN after losing $42,000
Back in January, Floyd Mayweather took to Instagram to blast ESPN after a frustrating betting error cost him $42,000. The retired boxing champ, known for his high-stakes sports wagers, had placed a bet on the San Jose Spartans vs. Utah State Aggies game. Mayweather bet $22,000 on Utah State leading by more than seven points at halftime. ESPN’s app erroneously showed Utah State ahead by eight, but in reality, they were only up by seven.
This discrepancy led to Mayweather losing his bet. Mayweather’s Instagram post read, “ESPN’s app showed Utah State being up by 8 points at the half, but when I went to cash my ticket the Sportsbook told me that I lost. I’ve known ESPN to have the most official scores. It’s only some pocket change but it’s the principle.” His anger highlights the critical role accurate scoring plays in high-stakes gambling.
