After playing his final Grand Slam match, Dominic Thiem, an Austrian tennis player, said that it is “not that difficult” for him to retire from the game.
At the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Thiem lost to American No. 2 Ben Shelton, 6-4 6-2 6-2, in the opening match of the 2024 US Open.
After earning a wildcard into the 2020 event, Thiem, 30, said earlier this year that this would be his last season of competition. This would be his final Grand Slam match.
Due to a wrist injury, the former World No. 3 has had a difficult few years. Thiem indicates that he is content to bid the ATP Tour farewell.
“I was thrilled about it after I made the decision this year in March,” Thiem remarked. Additionally, I was able to start preparing for this upcoming new phase.
To be completely honest, I loved going on tour and was extremely patient about it, but I also always really appreciated spending as much time as possible at home and leading a somewhat normal life. Because of this, I don’t think it will be too difficult for me, and I’m also content with my choice.
Over his career, Thiem defeated “the big three” of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic to win 17 ATP titles, including the US Open and Indian Wells.
Even though Thiem seemed happy to stop competing, he acknowledged that he still wanted to be involved in tennis in the future.
Thiem declared, “I want to stay in tennis, of course.” It would be fantastic if athletes from our academy in Austria came to compete in the US Open or other major international tournaments. Our academy is located in Austria. This would be the objective as well as a truly lovely thing.
Thiem’s career will not finish here; in October, he will compete in his home ATP tournament in Vienna before bidding adieu at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown event in Frankfurt.

Ben Shelton, Dominic Thiem’s opponent, is a player who hopes to go deep in the US Open once more, so even if Thiem put in a respectable effort, it was always going to be more about the farewell. Though Thiem’s career has been severely disrupted by a wrist injury over the past three years, it is encouraging to hear him sound so happy about bidding the ATP Tour farewell.
