Bad for pretty much everybody”: Golf analyst concerned by Jay Monahan’s statement on PGA-PIF deal

Rex Hoggard, a golf analyst, joined Rex and Lav on the Golf Channel Podcast to discuss his concerns about PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan’s recent remarks about the PGA-LIV contract. Speaking with reporters about the planned agreement during last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, Monahan stated that the PIF, which is essentially the owner of LIV Golf, and the PGA were not close to reaching a contract and that it was not assured to happen in a certain amount of time.

Since last December, when both sides had committed to come to a framework agreement for a planned merger of the two golf series, the PGA and LIV deal has been postponed. Despite this, neither PGA nor LIV have given any indication that they have made a final decision.Prior to the Masters Tournament, in March or April, was the previous deadline. In the meantime, the PGA Tour and Strategic Sports Group struck a $3 billion deal in January to establish PGA Tour Enterprises, a new company in which PGA players will receive stock interests contingent on their professional accomplishments. Hoggard recently emphasised the delay and said, “I think it’s becoming less and less probable that we are going to end up with any sort of arrangement,” following Monahan’s remarks regarding the PGA-PIF deal’s hazy prospects. I don’t believe that the game should follow this course because I believe that a fractured game is detrimental to more than just the fans. It’s detrimental to corporate partners, media partners, and pretty much everybody else as well. [20:24]

About the LIV-PGA arrangement, Jay Monahan

At a news conference held prior to the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Jay Monahan discussed the current state of the LIV-PGA partnership. He said the talks were difficult, but he did not provide a detailed update on the agreement.

“These are really difficult conversations… They consist of numerous components. You can only be hopeful when there is this much engagement, when we are still meeting, moving forward, discussing, and debating. Regarding timings, durations, and our current location, let me simply state that the chats are going well. That’s the most crucial factor, according to Jay Monahan.

The FedEx Cup playoffs are now in progress, and the PGA Tour is in its autumn season. The Sentry will be the first event on the PGA Tour calendar for 2025.
