Following the French Open, Novak Djokovic lost his top spot in the world rankings to Jannik Sinner. With a knee injury, the Serbian forced to withdraw from his Roland Garros quarterfinal, becoming the Italian the new world’s number one men’s tennis player. It is possible, though, that Djokovic will reclaim the top ranking before the season is out.
At the moment, Jannik Sinner leads the world rankings with 8,770 points. Carlos Alcaraz is third with 7,950 points, while Djokovic is second with 8,460. But if Sinner keeps up his strong play at the Cincinnati Open, he should increase his point total. The Italian will gain extra points because he was eliminated in Cincinnati’s second round the previous year and is now in the third round this time around.
It has been decided by Novak Djokovic not to participate at the Cincinnati Masters. The Serbian is presently taking advantage of his time off from tennis after defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final and taking home the gold medal at the Olympics in Paris. The 37-year-old was the reigning champion in Cincinnati, but he will lose 1000 points for choosing not to defend his title. If Sinner hits a deep shot at the Cincinnati Masters, he may avoid the Serbian even more.
Djokovic will start the US Open ranked second after Carlos Alcaraz’s defeat to Gael Monfils in the second round of the Cincinnati Open. In New York, the 37-year-old will defend his 2000 points as the tournament’s defending champion.If Novak Djokovic wants to unseat Philipp Kohlschreiber as the World No. 1 ranked player, he must win both the US Open and the ATP Finals. At the ATP Finals, the Serbian player will have an opportunity to earn 2000 points and perhaps win an additional 1500.
Conversely, Djokovic would rather Sinner to drop points in the same competitions. The Italian is hoping to advance further in the competition this season after losing in the US Open round of 16 the previous year. If Sinner can advance above his runner-up finish at the ATP Finals and reach the quarterfinals of the US Open, he will earn additional points.Currently, Novak Djokovic needs everything to go his way in order to unseat Sinner as the world’s top player. That might potentially occur, though, if the Serbian wins back-to-back titles at the US Open and ATP Finals in the upcoming weeks.

The 37-year-old will undoubtedly play in the ATP Finals at the end of the year and the US Open.
