Jay Monahan says the PGA Tour players ‘know an awful lot’ about ‘running a business,’ dismisses worries about their powers

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan recently opened up about the role of players on the circuit in contributing to the progress of the series. Since the inception of LIV Golf, the PGA Tour has undergone numerous changes, including the formation of the PGA Tour Policy Board Players Directors. The directors include Patrick Cantlay, Peter Malnati, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson, Jordan Spieth, and Tiger Woods.

During a press conference at the 2024 FedEx Cup St. Jude Championship, Jay Monahan was asked about the PGA Tour players’ input in the circuit’s decisions. He acknowledged that the players “know an awful lot” about business and “understand the competitive strength” of the Tour, so he does not worry about their powers.

“I think the players know an awful lot and are very passionate because they’re inside the ropes, they’re traveling every week, they’re playing all these tournaments. They understand the competitive strength, the competitive prominence of the PGA TOUR,” Monahan said (via ASAP Sports).

“That’s something that, as you can see from the schedule this year, they continue to lean into and lean in on. So the work that’s happening on the schedule and on the PGA TOUR, the player input there has been extraordinary,” he added.

The PGA Tour Policy Board Directors play an important role in the Tour’s negotiations with the Public Investment Fund (PIF). Although the deal is yet to be finalized, the Players Directors have met with PIF Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan to discuss the potential merger.

Initially, Rory McIlroy was part of the directors, but he stepped down last year, with Jordan Spieth replacing him on the board.

Monahan described the ongoing merger talks as “very complicated discussions” but expressed that he is “hopeful” for a positive outcome.

“These are very complicated discussions. There are a lot of elements to them. But when you have the level of interaction, when you’re continuing to meet, move forward and discuss and innovate, you can’t be anything other than hopeful,” Monahan said (via ASAP Sports).
