Sport will be removed from 2028 Olympics with replacement already named

The Olympic Games in 2028 will have one fewer sport, and its replacement has already been announced.

After Sunday, August 11, the 2024 Paris Olympics came to an end, but spectators are eagerly anticipating the 2028 competition.

Forty-four years after the Californian city hosted the 1984 Games, Los Angeles will host the 34th Olympiad.

The calendar features every “classic” Olympic sport, including as track and field, swimming, and gymnastics.

Even though it just made its Olympic debut in Paris this summer, one sport won’t be played in Los Angeles.

The decision to exclude breakdancing from the 2028 Games was made before to the start of this summer’s Olympics.

On Friday, August 9, breaking made its Olympic debut in the B-girls category, which was followed on Saturday by the B-boys tournament.

Canada won the B-boys competition, while Japan won the gold in the B-girls.

However, some viewers did find the breaking competition to be problematic, mostly because of the performance of Australian participant Raygun, also known as Rachael Gunn.

The 36-year-old had to come to her own defence when her unusual routine—which included a sprinkler and a kangaroo hop—went popular on social media.

Raygun voiced her displeasure that breaking will not be a part of the 2028 Games after failing to score a single point in any of her three breaking fights.

“Being told it wouldn’t be in L.A. was disheartening, especially since we didn’t get a chance to exhibit it,” she remarked.

“That was possibly a little premature. I wonder if they’re kicking themselves now?

“What is an Olympic sport? What are the similarities between dressage and artistic swimming and the 100m sprint and the pentathlon?

“Breaking is clearly athletic, it clearly requires a whole level of dedication across a number of different aspects. It’s really bringing a new level of excitement.”

In the absence of breaking, the 2028 Olympics will see the return of cricket after a 128 year absence.

Cricket has only featured once at the Olympics – in 1900 – and will be played in a Twenty20 format.

Along with cricket, baseball, softball and lacrosse will all return for the L.A. Games after periods of absence, while flag football and squash will feature from the very first time.

Optional events skateboarding and speed climbing – the former made its Olympics debut in Tokyo in 2021 – will become permanent events.
