Former world No 1 believes Novak Djokovic falls short of being the goat athlete

Although Yevgeny Kafelnikov has praised Novak Djokovic as the greatest tennis player of all time, he doesn’t think the player can be considered the greatest athlete in sports history.

Michael Jordan, the legendary basketball player who also played professional baseball, is viewed as the best athlete of all time by Kafelnikov.

He claims that Jordan stands out as someone you simply had to see because of his captivating charm.

“No question about it, Novak is the greatest tennis player of all time. It is not possible to compare him to Michael Jordan. I don’t think so, as I was raised idolising Michael Jordan, the greatest athlete of all time,” Kafelnikov stated on social media.

“I just wanted to see him perform live. With all of his achievements, shattered records, and championships, Novak is unquestionably among the top three athletes of all time, however I still think he is the best.

In Paris, Djokovic finally provided a solution for the younger generation, as he stunned many by defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the gold medal match.

The Serbian realised he needed to figure out how to defeat players like Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner after the Spaniard defeated him in straight sets at Wimbledon.

As he processed his defeat at SW19, Djokovic remarked, “Well, the Olympic Games and US Open are the two key targets for the rest of the year for me basically.”

“Yes, I hope to perform to the best of my abilities in those two events. I’m at a loss for words at this point.

“Obviously, making it to the Wimbledon finals gives you a lot more confidence. However, I also believe that I would not be at the same level in a contest against the best player in the world right now—aside from Jannik, who is by far the best this year—today.

Despite Serbia’s success in the Olympics, Carlos Alcaraz refrains from calling Novak Djokovic the greatest of all time.

“I’m going to have to play much better than I did today and feel lot better than I did today if I want to actually have a chance to, you know, defeat these players in Grand Slam later stages or at the Olympics.

“I’ll put some effort into it. It’s not something I have never encountered in my life before. Over the course of my job, I’ve encountered so many diverse situations. Usually, when faced with hardship, I overcome it, grow, and become stronger.

“That is what I intend to do.”
