Carlos Alcaraz stays as world No 1 in rankings endorsed by Novak Djokovic

The official ATP Rankings may have Jannik Sinner at the top, but Carlos Alcaraz leads an other rankings list that might be a better indicator of current form.

Alcaraz’s incredible summer of triumph included winning his maiden French Open championship and keeping his Wimbledon title after a devastating victory over Novak Djokovic in the All England Club final in July.

Alcaraz is now ranked #1 in the world according to the UTR Rankings, which determine the top tennis players of the present era using a different methodology.

Unlike the conventional ATP list, the UTR rankings are determined by an alternative methodology that considers both your opponent’s ranking and your current form.

The rolling ATP list, which ranks players according to the number of points they accrue over a 52-week period, uses a different methodology to determine the UTR ratings.

Wins over players ranked higher are valued more highly in the UTR list than they are in the ATP or WTA rankings, providing a more realistic representation of the state of play at the top of the rankings.

In order to encourage equitable and competitive play throughout the tennis world, the UTR rankings are based on recent performance over the last few weeks and months rather than results from as far back as a year ago.

Based on real-world match results, all players are evaluated on a uniform scale ranging from 1.00 to 16.50, irrespective of their age, gender, location, or skill level.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic has welcomed the UTR rankings, stating that they might provide a more true picture of the state of play right now.

Following his victory at the Australian Open in January, Jannik Sinner of Italy dethroned Djokovic in the UTR rankings. A few weeks later, he followed it up by shooting to the top of the ATP Rankings.

However, with his victories at the French Open and Wimbledon, Alcaraz has risen to the top of the UTR ranking, with Djokovic behind Sinner in third.

Following his strong performance in 2024, Australia’s Alex De Minaur is ranked in the top 5 of the UTR rankings, while Alexander Zverev is ranked sixth.

News from Carlos Alcaraz

How, before to the US Open, Carlos Alcaraz may surpass Novak Djokovic in the ATP Rankings

Despite Serbia’s success in the Olympics, Carlos Alcaraz refrains from calling Novak Djokovic the greatest of all time.

The remarkable form of a returning Matteo Berrettini is mirrored in the UTR ranking, where he is ranked as the 12th best player in the world on current form. The American combo of Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz are also in the top ten.

Despite a recent slump in play, Andrey Rublev of Russia is still ranked in the top 10 of the ATP rankings, but he is down to a pitiful No. 26 on the UTR list.

Alcaraz will find it difficult to unseat Sinner at the top of the ATP Rankings in the second half of 2024, despite his incredible recent performance.

Sinner will have an opportunity to earn ranking points if he can get it to the semi-finals or win the final major of the year, following his last-16 loss to Alexander Zverev in the US Open last year.

Alcaraz, however, has a lot of points to defend if he plays in the Cincinnati Masters next week, where he finished second last year, and he also lost 180 points by pulling out of this week’s Montreal Masters.

During the ATP Tour’s indoor swing, Alcaraz will have chances to unseat Sinner atop the ATP Rankings, but he acknowledges that Djokovic and Sinner are still a step ahead of him under those circumstances.
