“We didn’t divorce amicably“, claims Wolff as he opens up on Hamilton’s departure

Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, did not announce his desire to divorce “amicably,” according to Mercedes team manager Toto Wolff.

On February 1st, Lewis Hamilton abruptly announced his retirement from Mercedes. Being that the seven-time world champion was scheduled to race for the Brackley-based team till the end of 2025, the statement took the Formula One community off guard.

Nevertheless, the British driver decided to abandon his contract at the conclusion of the current campaign in order to pursue a new challenge with Ferrari the following year. Based on statistics, Hamilton has won more world championships than any other driver in Formula One history. He is tied with the legendary German Michael Schumacher, who won seven titles overall.

In an interview with Sky Sports F1, Wolff discussed Hamilton’s goodbye, likening it to an amicable divorce.

“There are two types of relationships: personal and professional. However, we had agreed to a short-term contract, so this was always a possibility. I felt hurt because I was unable to respond in time.

“Everything transpired in a single day, and upon contemplating the announcement’s timing, it became evident that Ferrari had leaked the information and that it coincided with the release of their financial figures.”

Wolff expressed remorse for not being able to notify sponsors and shareholders of Lewis Hamilton’s departure and the current circumstances as soon as possible.

I once came onto the maxim, “Play hard, forgive fast, and own up to your mistakes.” Our personal relationship, that is, has not been impacted.

“If I were in his position, I could understand it; the squad wasn’t performing well and was nearing the end of its career, and everyone wanted to dress like the little horse in a red suit. Additionally, there were undoubtedly very advantageous financial circumstances.

“Our friendship is much deeper; I am at ease with him and I understand his intentions. However, we didn’t end our marriage amicably,” Wolff said.
