US gymnast Simone Biles becomes oldest all-around champion since 1952

Since 1952, American artistic gymnast Simone Biles has been the oldest champion in the all-around category.

The 27-year-old American gymnast defeated her compatriot Sunisa Lee, who finished in third place, and Rebeca Andrade, who placed second from Brazil.

“Biles once again showed off her skills, winning the all-around with a 59.131 total and defeating Andrade (57.932). Olympic champion Suni Lee took up the bronze with a score of 56.465, according to a statement from the Olympics.

After thirty-year-old Soviet gymnast Maria Gorokhovskaya won the first-ever Olympic all-around in Melbourne in 1952, she won the largest title in the women’s division of her sport.

In addition, Biles shattered a record that had stood for 120 years, making her the only American gymnast to win six gold medals at the Olympics, including six in Rio 2016.
