Charlie Woods bounces back from US Junior Amateur nightmare to win first ‘major’ title

Charlie Woods achieved his first “major” triumph earlier this week when the legendary Tiger Woods’ son emerged victorious in the South Florida Junior Cup.

Throughout the competition at the East Course of BallenIsles Country Club, Woods Jr. scored rounds of 73, 68, and 73 to guarantee he was the only player below par. This was sufficient to give him the victory in the competition, making it one of the eight main events on the South Florida Junior Tour schedule.

“I was very excited about it,” the child remarked later. “I had a clear sense of focus and knew exactly what needed to be done. I wanted to show myself that I was capable of more.

It seemed to be the culmination of many hours of labour this summer. I felt really good about how I played, and I wanted to make amends.” Only one week had passed since he had a difficult time at the US Junior Amateur, where his father was watching him miss the cut.

A week earlier, at The Open Championship, Tiger had made just his sixth start of the season. He suffered the same fate as his son, missing the cut for the third time in four events at Royal Troon due to difficult conditions.

Due to injuries he had in a vehicle accident in February 2021, Woods is currently playing on the PGA Tour on a part-time basis while he deals with a number of physical concerns. Woods has only participated in one regular Tour event this year, the Genesis Invitational in February, outside of the four majors.

However, this too came to an early end as Woods had to withdraw from the competition midway through the second round because of sickness. And after he declared he would be taking a vacation from competition following his missed cut at The Open in July, his competitive career came to an end.

Consequently, he announced following his missed cut that he will be hosting the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas in December, which will be his next PGA Tour appearance. Woods declared, “I’m not going to play till then [the Hero World Challenge].” I’m just going to keep working on it and improving physically.”

But in the wake of the Hero, he did clarify that he also intends to participate with his son Charlie in this year’s PNC Championship. “I’m looking forward to it, hopefully simply coming back for our, what is it, our fifth major, the Father/Son [PNC Championship].”

The Woods brothers have participated in the parent-child competition at the Ritz Carlton in Florida for the past three years. Their best result came in 2021 when they finished the 54-hole competition in second place, two shots behind the eventual champions, John Daly and John Daly Jr.
