Simone Biles reveals new U.S. women’s gymnastics team name, responds to doubters

In 2012, there were the “Fierce Five.” In 2016, the “Final Five” and in 2021 the “Fighting Four” There are the “Golden Girls” now.

Hours after winning team gold, Simone Biles revealed the new moniker for the U.S. women’s gymnastics squad this year.

According to USA Gymnastics, Biles (27), Jade Carey (24), Jordan Chiles (23), Suni Lee (21) and Hezly Rivera (16) complete the team, which has an average age of 22.467, making it the oldest American women’s gymnastics squad to participate at the Olympics since 1952.

The group assisted Biles in breaking the record for the most Olympic medals won by American gymnasts. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Biles became the first woman to win eight medals in the Olympic gymnastics competition and the ninth woman overall since Nadia Comaneci of Romania finished with nine in 1980.

At the news conference following the meeting on Tuesday, Biles was questioned about the team’s nickname by former colleague Aly Raisman earlier in the day. She laughed in the press room at the moment when she jokingly said, “F— around and find out.”

It might have served as a warning to those who harbour doubts. Additionally, Biles seemed to address contentious remarks made earlier this month by MyKayla Skinner, a teammate and former American gymnast.

In a since-deleted YouTube video, Skinner berated the U.S. team’s all-around talent.

“Aside from Simone [Biles], I think the depth and talent aren’t as strong as they once were,” Skinner remarked. “Notice that a lot of girls obviously don’t work as hard. Simply said, the girls lack a strong work ethic.”

Apparently noticing, Biles shared a celebration-themed Instagram snapshot of the team on Tuesday, captioning it, “lack of talent, lazy, olympic champs.”
