When Simone Biles and Suni Lee participate in the all-around final, history will be made

At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Simone Biles and Suni Lee will compete for the United States in the individual all-around final and create history in the process.

It will be the first time two Olympic all-around winners will compete against each other in an Olympic all-around final when Biles, the 2016 Olympic all-around champion, and Lee, the 2020 Olympic all-around champion, take the stage on Thursday, August 1.

Biles and Lee placed first and third, respectively, on Sunday. Lee had a score of 56.132, while Biles received a 59.566.

With a great bar performance that scored 14.866, Lee secured her spot on Team USA’s second individual all-around spot, narrowly defeating compatriot Jordan Chiles by just.067.

Due to a rule that only permits two athletes from each nation to compete in the individual all-around finals, Chiles, who finished fourth with a 56.065, will not be able to participate in the all-around final.

Suni Lee, the gold medallist in all-around competition last year, proved she was ready to defend her championship. Alongside colleague Simone Biles, the three-time Olympic medallist will also compete in the uneven bars and balance beam finals.

Biles battled a calf problem that made for a dramatic debut, but she still achieved a record high for women’s gymnastics.

After practicing her signature move, “the Biles,” for her floor routine, Biles was heard saying to her instructor, “uh oh, not good,” during the 30-second warmup before the performance.

During her floor warm-up, Biles’ coach Cecile Landi reported that the gymnast “had a little soreness in her calf.” Landi stated that she wasn’t worried about Biles’ performance going forward and that there were currently no plans for her to adjust her routines or withdraw from any events.

Despite the pain, Biles persisted in being regarded as the best gymnast of all time.

The U.S. women’s gymnastics team clinched their spot in the team final after finishing in first place after the first two subdivisions with a 172.296.

Here’s how the top eight teams rank heading into finals:
