Kevin Durant unlikely to play in Team USA’s Olympic opener against Serbia, Insider says

According to ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst , Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant is not expected to play in Team USA’s opening group game against Serbia at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris on July 28. Durant has been nursing a strained calf and was scratched from Team USA’s exhibition match against Serbia in London.

Despite missing all five exhibition matches, coach Steve Kerr has made it clear that KD will not be replaced on the roster. Kerr believes that the nation’s leading scorer will be able to play at some point during the Olympics, but hopes are dim that he will be ready for the opener against Serbia.

I think they’re going to be playing Serbia without Kevin Durant. They really were hoping he would be able to play one of these two games in London – he was a scratch tonight. Steve Kerr met with him today and decided he needs more time with that strained calf. Brian Windhorst said via Sports Center

Team USA has struggled in their exhibition matches, with only convincing wins against Serbia and Canada. They scraped by against South Sudan, Germany, and Australia, raising concerns about their performance without Durant.

Coach Kerr had earlier expressed confidence in Durant’s ability to fit right in once he returns from injury, citing his exceptional skill and experience. However, it remains to be seen when Durant will be able to take the court.

Kevin Durant expected to play in Olympics opener despite calf injury, his agent counters

Kevin Durant’s agent, Rich Kleiman, has disputed reports that the star forward will miss Team USA’s Olympics opener against Serbia due to a calf injury. Kleiman stated that the suggestion from ESPN’s Brian Windhorst is “not true,” and Kevin Durant is expected to take the floor on Sunday.

Steve Kerr has also downplayed the idea of replacing Durant, saying there has been “no thought” of doing so despite the injury. Durant himself has reported seeing progress every day and will continue to monitor his condition. With the Americans already replacing injured Kawhi Leonard with Derrick White, Durant’s return will be a significant boost.

Durant’s return is eagerly anticipated, as he has helped Team USA win gold in the last three Olympics and has the opportunity to become the first men’s basketball player to win four gold medals. His presence will be crucial in Team USA’s quest for another gold medal, and his motivation to return from injury is high.
