LeBron James chosen as flag bearer for Team USA at 2024 Paris Olympics

LeBron James has been selected as the flag bearer for Team USA during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

The NBA star was voted by his Olympic teammates to carry the flag during the opening ceremony along the River Seine on Friday. James becomes the first U.S. men’s basketball player to earn the honor of flag bearer for the opening ceremony. Team USA women’s basketball players Sue Bird (2020) and Dawn Staley (2004) were previous flag bearers for Team USA’s Olympic squad.

“It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” James said in a statement. “For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only myself, but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians and so many people across the country with big aspirations. Sports have the power to bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”

James, who is participating in his fourth Olympics was chosen by his fellow Team USA athletes. He was nominated by Team USA basketball teammate Stephen Curry.

James is seeking his fourth Olympic medal and third gold. He hasn’t competed in the Olympics since 2012, when he won his second consecutive gold medal. He first competed in 2004, when Team USA won the bronze medal. He helped lead the 2008 “Redeem Team” and the 2012 team to gold. He opted to not play in 2016 and 2021. Team USA is looking to capture its fifth consecutive gold medal.

The women’s representative as Team USA’s flag bearer will be named Tuesday.
