‘It’s got to be over’: After leaving Tottenham, Richard Keys says star man has now ‘stunk the place out’

Yes, Spurs improved in so many ways in Ange Postecoglou’s debut season, but the mood wasn’t exactly one of high spirits at the start.

The London club had just finished outside of Europe, they had to watch another campaign of dour football and then to make matters worse Daniel Levy sold Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.

Without their all-time leading goalscorer, Spurs fans were understandably fearing the worst.

But they surprised many by making an outrageous start, sitting top of the Premier League table after ten matches before fading away and securing a fifth-placed finish.

Added to that, Tottenham also improved their style of play tenfold to the point that fans are very much looking forward to the new season.

Who would have thought that life could be so bright for Spurs after losing Kane? Paul Merson was changing his mind about Tottenham pretty quickly.

But the same can’t be said for the England captain himself, who finished his debut campaign at Bayern trophyless and now many are questioning if Kane will ever win a trophy.

If Kane thought his first season in Munich was one to forget from a team perspective, then it only got worse for him with England at Euro 2024.

Richard Keys claimed that the 30-year-old ‘stunk the place out’ and now it’s time for him to be replaced, as he wrote in his personal blog.

Gareth Southgate hauled off Kane several times, including in the final against Spain after just an hour, which summed it all up.

Harry Kane struggles at Euro 2024 with England

“Kane stunk the place out,” said Keys. “He had to be carrying an injury surely? He couldn’t have been as bad as he was unless that was the case.

“I’m sorry to say it – but it’s got to be over for him now. With the likes of Toney and Watkins available why persist with Kane? Perhaps England could go in a different direction and not play with a traditional nine? Maybe Bellingham could do a job at the top end? That way you get more ‘players’ in the team.

“If you didn’t see my first Euro blog have a look at what I said then. I argued England should leave Kane out. I got hammered – but I wasn’t alone by the end of the tournament was I?”

Life after Tottenham Hotspur for Harry Kane

You feel his career is at a bit of a crossroads. If Kane’s struggles continue, then you worry what that will do for the rest of his career.

Carrying an injury or not, the former Tottenham man looked slower and stiffer than ever at the Euros and it’s a big issue.

If it continues when he returns to club action next season, and Bayern continue to struggle, then he won’t be welcomed like he was in his first 12 months.

That’s why it’s key that Kane starts to rack up the trophies at Bayern Munich as soon as possible because they are called FC Hollywood for a reason.
