PGA Tour star Matthew Fitzpatrick was not (!) happy with England’s performance against Switzerland

PGA Tour star Matthew Fitzpatrick thought he was watching a different game after England came back from the brink of a Euro 2024 exit once again thanks to a penalty shootout victory against Switzerland.

Gareth Southgate’s men were rescued by Jude Bellingham’s spectacular overhead kick in the round of 16 against Slovakia and were up against it yet again when Breel Embole put the Swiss ahead with only 15 minutes to go.

Bukayo Saka produced a moment of individual brilliance five minutes later and, after extra time failed to find a winner, England booked their place in the semi-final thanks a flawless penalty shootout performance.

Fitzpatrick wasn’t convinced at all in the immediate aftermath, and posted on X:

Of course, those responding to Fitzpatrick were quick to crack the Southgate jokes.

“Just more evidence that Gareth Southgate lays up on a par-3,” one wrote.

Another joked: “It’s like watching Patrick Cantlay, Brian Harman and Keegan Bradley in a three-ball.”

England will play either Turkey or the Netherlands in the semi-final in Dortmund next Wednesday.

As for Fitzpatrick, the Englishman will be back in action next week at The Renaissance Club for the Scottish Open.

A week later the 29-year-old will attempt to win his second major title at the final men’s major of the year at Royal Troon.

Fitzpatrick will fancy his chances at The Open, given he excels on difficult courses.

That being said, his best finish at the major came five years ago when he tied for 20th at Royal Portrush.
