Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou may suddenly have a £15 million transfer opportunity

As of right now, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s involvement in Euro 2024 is officially over. After Denmark advanced from Group C, where they placed second behind England, they faced Germany in the round of 16.

In a very difficult match for Kasper Hjulmand’s team against the home team, Denmark overcame an early scare as Nico Schlotterbeck’s header was disallowed and proceeded to cause problems for the hosts with their own opportunities. As always, Tottenham star Hojbjerg was a vital member of Denmark’s midfield and a driving force. He also put on a fantastic display that made life difficult for Ilkay Gundogan and the rest of Germany’s midfield.

However, a contentious few minutes at the beginning of the second half would tip the balance in Germany’s favour, as Kai Havertz scored the first goal from the penalty spot. Moments after Joachim Andersen’s goal was narrowly disallowed for offside, the Crystal Palace defender was found to have handled the ball in the penalty area, and Havertz completed the task.

Hojbjerg and Denmark kept having opportunities to score on Manuel Neuer’s goal, especially through Rasmus Hojlund, but Jamal Musiala’s well-taken goal in the 68th minute increased the lead and dealt a crushing blow to the Danes. After four thrilling games for Denmark in Germany, Hojbjerg’s tournament is ended, and he will now embark on his summer vacation.

Given the impact that both the Copa America and Euro 2024 have had on clubs’ summer transfer business in terms of both inbound and outbound transfers, Hojbjerg’s early tournament departure may provide Tottenham the chance to expedite the 28-year-old’s departure from the team. With his impressive campaign at the Euros and experience, the former Southampton player—who Transfermarkt values at £15 million—should have no shortage of choices.

Prior to Ange Postecoglou’s arrival at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in June 2023, the midfielder was a regular in the starting lineup. He did, however, play in 36 of the team’s 38 Premier League games during the 2023–24 season, with just eight of those appearances coming from the starting line. Long before Rodrigo Bentancur recovered from his long-term injury, Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr moved up above Hojbjerg in the pecking order. They were just not the right fit for the Australian system.

The Copenhagen-born player was a vital member of Tottenham’s bench throughout the season, even if he didn’t get many starts. His ability to see a game through to the end was a welcome addition. But Hojbjerg doesn’t want that kind of position, and it does appear likely that he will leave in the summer to resume starting every week.

Due to the player’s contract status, Tottenham must let him go this summer in order to avoid losing him for nothing at the end of the 2024–2025 season. The last year of Hojbjerg’s tenure in N17 begins on Monday.

The first team players of Tottenham are expected to return to Hotspur Way on Saturday, July 6th, for preseason training. However, Hojbjerg will not reunite with his teammates until later in the month, since he is now leaving for his summer vacation after an exhausting campaign. Transfer rumours could pick up steam in early July, which may lead to Hojbjerg—who is leaving Euro 2024—finally agreeing to leave N17 after spending four years in the city.

After an extremely successful tournament in Germany, he was linked to Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund this summer. Now, a few more teams might be eager to sign him for the 2024–2025 season. Some club is likely to get a real steal this summer when it comes to signing Hojbjerg because of his contract issue.
