Anthony Gordon admits schoolboy error caused infamous England bike crash

England winger Anthony Gordon fell off a bike during a team outing earlier this week, suffering a nasty gash to his chin and cuts on his nose to the amusement of his team-mates

Anthony Gordon has promised to get on his bike if he produces Euro 2024 heroics in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday.

If the Newcastle United striker scores against Slovakia, he will perform a special cycling celebration in the wake of the crash that left him all cut up in Germany. And despite his bizarre prang, Gordon has told Gareth Southgate that he has never felt better, is raring to go and will be a ‘nightmare’ for Slovakia if the England boss selects him.

But after giving graphic details of his bike smash, it is clear Gordon is VERY lucky to be available for England’s last-16 clash. He recalled: “It was meant to be a recovery bike ride. It was a lovely day, I was going down a hill, trying to take a quick video for my family.

“Before I knew it, I was head first into the floor. They are electric so they are faster than normal bikes and, in England, the front brake is on the right-hand side.

“Here, I tried to press the left (brake) just to slow down and, next minute, it has not slowed down, it has fully come to a stop … and I haven’t! I have gone ten feet in the air, chin first.

“With the speed I was going down a hill. I could have been injured. I could have ended up anywhere. It was on the golf course and I managed to land on the only bit of gravel there was. I was surrounded by grass and managed to land on the gravel. So, I was really lucky in some instances and unlucky in some others.

“Because I was on my phone I didn’t know I was falling off until I hit the floor. I was just focused on my phone. The moral of the story is that we spend too much time on our phones these days.”

Luckily for Gordon, Southgate saw the funny side of it and now has to decide whether or not to unleash the Newcastle man from the start. If he does, Gordon is backing himself to cause Slovenia problems.

He said: “I know I am a nightmare for anyone that I play against.” And if he does score, will he have a bike celebration at the ready? He laughed: “I will do it. You’ve got my word!”
