“I simply forgot that it was ever there,” Matt Fitzpatrick says, exposing the strange cause of his car troubles

It seems amazing that a guy with Matt Fitzpatrick’s attention to detail would make such a basic error and end up with a driving issue.

Without even realizing it, the 2022 US Open winner was using his driver with an extra weight for a full year.

When Fitzpatrick was testing in February 2023, he put a four-gram weight to his driver grip. Little did he know that it would stay there, and as a result, he began to notice a miss left with his big dog sneaking into his game.

Furthermore, the Englishman had simply forgotten about the extra weight, so it wasn’t until his driver needed to be replaced in February of this year that the remedy was discovered.

“We tested the grip in February of last year with a weight in it, but we never removed it. Fitzpatrick remarked, “I simply forgot that it was ever in there for whatever reason.

“It felt like night and day as soon as it was released, and I played it the following day.” It would not move to the left, no matter how hard I hit it. In the past, when I struck it hard, it would go directly to the left.

Fitzpatrick generated a lot of uncertainty by winning the RBC Heritage and Dunhill Links Championship despite the problem.

“My driving kind of got worse from pretty much after Harbour Town, and we were going back and forth,” said Fitzpatrick.

Matt Fitzpatrick led the Players Championship driving stats.

“We basically did everything and were really bewildered in every way. It turns out that when I remove the weight from the driver’s top, I’ve driven it much better ever since, at least in Phoenix.

“Maybe I’d have won four times if I had it out.”

Fitzpatrick’s drop from 10th to 92nd place on the PGA Tour in strokes gained off the tee last year was caused by the problem.

And it appeared to be paying off at TPC Sawgrass, as Fitzpatrick scored a first round 66, missing only three fairways and leading the field in driving. He was only one shot off the lead.

He said, “I drove it like I felt like I could drive it.” “It felt a little bit like my old self to me; I putted and drove the ball well, and those two things have always been the key to my good plays, really.”
